Difference between NeoOffice & OpenOffice

Hi All,

This may not be the rigth forum to inquire.. not sure where to post this however, what is truly the difference between NeoOffice and OpenOffice... NeoOffice worked for me first go where as OpenOffice wanted x11 file and that scared the **** since my macbook said the x11 was too large or something to that effect... so I am indeed only working with NeoOffice.

since I do not wish to loose out if OpenOffice is better hence the question..

It is definitely the wrong forum, but we are a nice crowd. The right place to ask is http://trinity.neooffice.org/modules.php?name=Forums .

Anyhow, if you are happy with NeoOffice, look no further. There is nothing wrong with it. It is true that OpenOffice has more and newer features, but, as you noticed, OO is not trivial to use.

However, if you notice something missing in NeoOffice, which is in OpenOffice, it is not that difficult to install and use OO either.

I guess the problem with x11 was that it was not installed. It is not installed by default on new Macs. And it is not really worth installing it, unless you know that you need it.

But go to http://trinity.neooffice.org/modules.php?name=Forums , and I'm sure they will be able to give a more detailed answer.

Hello,

I've used both NeoOffice and Open Office/X11 for quite a while. The newest Neo/aqua beta 3 is very similar in features to Open Office 2.1. Neo does not include a Database program, Open Office does. The best things in Neo, in my opinion, is the native font and printer support along with integration with the finder (drag and drop) and mail (ability to open .doc files and .xls files from mail messages).

One word of caution about running Open Office and Neo at the same time. Because of the way that X11(Open Office) handles fonts, it can interfere with native OSX font handling (see this tread at trinity: http://trinity.neooffice.org/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=3714).

In summary, I like Neo better than OO, it's just easier and it is as compatible with Microsoft documents as it gets. The new Neo 2.1 version (due shortly) will be xml compatible. I no longer pay the big money for MS Office, with Neo there is no need. Just my opinion.

Regards, Tom
