"The file “NoteStore.sqlite” couldn’t be opened because it isn’t in the correct format The file might be corrupted, truncated, or in an unexpected format-notes went missing?

was using notes last night oct 29 2017. notes working normally as it would daily, typed a few words then suddenly it froze. then it showed "The file “NoteStore.sqlite” couldn’t be opened because it isn’t in the correct format The file might be corrupted, truncated, or in an unexpected format". i decided to just restart the computer. restarted the computer then opened notes. all the saved notes were gone? what went wrong? im trying to find a solution. please help. thanks. i've got things to do list there also some stuff that im trying to learn like programming. so its really time consuming to re-write, re-learn and save all the web content ive been doing for the past week/s. i havent updated my os. its still macos sierra but my guess its 2 or 1 updates behind. no idea if this has to do with the notes error. is the "NoteStore.sqlite" corrupted?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, macOS Sierra (10.12.3), null

On creating/modifying a note here on 10.12.6; the most recent changes, and seemingly the entire content of the note, are in Home/Library/Group Containers/group.com.apple.notes/NoteStore.sqlite-wal

It's not likely, but I would look at that file just in case it has a date prior to your problem.

**edit**

Here, anyway; after deliberately corrupting NoteStore.sqlite : I got no error message, but Notes was empty...

However, a new file had been created, which did contain the previous information

Home/Library/Group Containers/group.com.apple.notes/NoteStore.sqlite.backup

If you have this, even with a newer date than the problem : make duplicates before doing anything else.

Open it & search for some specific text that you know should be there. Textedit works well enough here, albeit hard to read... but we're just searching.

If it looks promising, I'll have to get back to you on what to rename after testing, since originally, NoteStore.sqlite-wal contained my text, but now it's in NoteStore.sqlite.backup, while NoteStore.sqlite.backup-wal is empty.

Despite notestore.sqlite.backup containing text (but not images) of recent notes, and seemingly (from the name) being intended as a backup after some sort of failure : I can't find any way to make Notes use that information to recover the lost items.

Restoring good copies of NoteStore.sqlite & NoteStore.sqlite-wal works perfectly well... but unfortunately, that's of no use to you.

@eric thanks for the reply. the recently deleted folders doesnt exist. im using apple's notes. my current os version is macos sierra 10.12.3 . everytime i start the notes app it shows this The file “NoteStore.sqlite” couldn’t be opened because it isn’t in the correct format, then it proceeds to open the empty notes. it is completely wiped out. i have saved files from the notes library. i did the notev6.storedata-wal conversion to .html then open on browser it showed alot of codes then some of my old notes from 10 months ago but its just a few. can installing the updates completely replace my old notes data? the notes data is precious to me. thanks.
