How do I automatically delete sent emails
My "sent" mailbox is filling up and taking up space. How do I set it up to automatically delete sent times after a certain time frame? thanks
MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

Ok, let me clarify my response. Rules can only be applied "automatically" to new incoming messages. They can NOT be automatically applied to existing messages. When I say "automatically", I mean there is no way to run a rule and have it pick through all messages in all folders and perform it's defined function. You must first SELECT ALL messages in a given folder (a folder other than the inbox). While ALL messages are selected, you then go to the menu and select: Message --> Apply Rules.
Please by all means provide more details if there is a way to fully automate this. Many users would be very grateful to have a fully automated method of handling this. Set it and forget, is the ideal goal here. Something Apple has been unable or unwilling to provide these many years.
Looking forward to your additional details.
Hello !
The purpose of mail rules is that if junk mails are incoming in the Mac from the sender that are to be moved in the trash .
The sent mails that has been moved out of from mail outbox and from the server , the rules should not be created from them .
In the same way for drafts folder or archive folder , flagged the rules are not be applied to them .
And why rules are to be set for sent items , suppose this method would have worked the Mac user will delete all its important mails that has been sent to his business clients or send to known persons and he would be empty handed and will loose all his mails .
Hi, Thanks for the clarification.
You're quite right : without an add-on (only paid, AFAIK); or perhaps a catch-all rule running an applescript to check/move the sent items (but that's likely to get slow with large numbers, unless there's a way to limit the number checked by date, or against a list of those already done)… Mail won't automatically move sent messages without the user selecting them & applying rules.

sent "items" not "times" (thanks autocorrect)
This.
No, you cannot solve this issue by creating a rule. Rules are only applied to the Inbox. Rules are not able to act on messages contained in any folder but the inbox.

Not true. It works perfectly well, although perhaps not on your computer.
