Problem with Mail

Recently uploaded El Capitan now every time I try using Mail toe send or to receive mail this message appears:

Mail can't verify the identity of server "pop.server.bendbroadband.com". I can send and receive mail by clicking on CONTINUE. This is very annoying and I never had this problem with the older operating system (Lion 10.7.5). Any help out there?

It may be possible that this email account is just not set up properly.

I suggest the following:

  • Go to the following website: Mail Settings Lookup - Apple Support
  • Enter your email address for your bendbroadband email account.
  • You should get results that include the proper email server setting to use with this account in the Mail App.
  • You can then check or verify if what the current settings match, and if necessary, make any changes.

It may just be that the email account is corrupted. Attempting to create a new one may prove successful. If so, you can just delete the other account.

If it doesn't then there are, at least, two possibilities:

  1. The Mail app cannot create a valid connection to the server(s), or
  2. The Mail app or mailboxes may be corrupted and a re-indexing would be required to try to sort things out.

Email uses a minimum of two servers; one for receiving (POP or IMAP) and the other for sending (SMTP).

Typically when you set up an email account in the Mail app, the app tries to configure the proper servers based on the email address you provide it. This works well for the most common email providers out there. However, if you run a private email server or use a lesser know email provider, it may require you to enter the proper server information manually.

You would do so, via the Mail app, as follows:

  1. From the Mail menu bar, select Mail > Preferences > Accounts
  2. Click on the "+" button at the bottom of the left window to add a new email account.
  3. Either select one of the pre-existing accounts or choose "Other Mail Account..." Most likely, this will be the one you will want to pick.
  4. Select it, and then, click on Continue.
  5. Enter the desired name in the Name field.
  6. Enter the email address and account password in the next two fields.
  7. BEFORE clicking on Sign In, hold down the Option key, and then, click on Sign In.
  8. You will now have the opportunity to enter both the account type and the incoming and outgoing mail servers.

Thanks so much I just couldn't remember that where I wanted to go was under Preferences. Now here's what I found. The correct server information was entered under Incoming mail server but it was grayed out which means, I guess, that Mail does not recognize or accept that server. So now what I suspect will happen if I create a new account as you suggest will be the same thing. If mail does not accept the existing server information, why should I expect mail to accept the same information in a new account?
