Using thunderbolt cable to transfer files

I am trying to transfer files between two Macbook Pro's. I follow the instruction to start one of the computers in Target Mode and I attached the cable, but it does not show up on the other computer?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, macOS High Sierra (10.13)

If you can get each computer onto the Internet without re-cabling, you already have a connection -- through your Router.
