Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted) not available!

I have been reading a lot on getting usb drives encrypted with password on Mac OS and that it should be so easy. But no matter what I try I just do not get the option "Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted)" to appear in Disk Utility. I am on 10.13.1 version of OS.

Can anyone help me here or tell me what I am doing wrong. I think I am more then advanced Mac user and have for years always been able to figure things out, but now I am stuck!

no does not work, either way.

Are you selecting the drive or a volume on the drive?

You must select the drive, not a part of it. High Sierra hides the drives in Disk Utility. You must select Show All Devices from the sidebar popup menu in order to select the hard drive.
