press home button to unlock doesnt work

Lately when I try to unlock my iPhone the home button and power button both work to wake up the screen but when I rest my finger on the touch id it doesn't unlock and I press the home button to unlock it and bring up the passcode keypad. But when I press the home button it doesn't do anything. Like the home button obviously works somehow because it pressing it will wake up the screen but the "press home to unlock" doesn't work. I end up having to restart my phone and then it works. I have an iPhone

iPhone 5s, iOS 11.0.3

Hi there sarmoso,

It sounds like you have to restart your phone to make your Touch ID register the fact that you are pressing the Home button to unlock the phone. This indicates a software issue to me so let's start by quitting the Settings app on the phone:

How to force an app to close on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Then restart it and test it out again. Now if the issue is still not resolved, we should next recommend these steps from the following article about troubleshooting Touch ID:

Get help with Touch ID on your iPhone or iPad
  1. Make sure that you have the latest version of iOS.
  2. Make sure that your fingers and the Home button are clean and dry.* For the Home button, use a clean, lint-free cloth to wipe off any dirt or debris.
  3. If you're using a case or screen protector, make sure it doesn't cover the Home button or the surrounding ring.

You could even go as far as to turn off Touch ID in Settings > Passcode Lock or Settings > Touch ID & Passcode, then restart the phone. This will remove your stored finger prints, and should refresh things. Then set up Touch ID again and test it all out.

Cheers!
