ok Ralph

I have it working again :-)

Ok, what you said above was the key.

Make Jabber OFFLINE in messages account

You have to delete from system - internet accounts google talk.

I then went into Library - preferences and removed anything with ichat in

Restarted computer

Now messages does NOT show icon at bottom of screen for jabber status.

Go into system - internet accounts add messages - jabber - all details.

Go to messages - configure accounts - google talk - (has to be inactive) (I had to make sure it used default settings and enter password couple of times). Then message - change status to online.

Got there in the end, thanks

Hi,

DO not have it as an Option to do in System Preferences > Internet Account > Google

Set it up as a Internet Accounts > Other Account and chose Messages then Jabber i.e. you are setting up a Messages only account.

Have Automatically find Server and Port and Enable SSL if not ticked automatically.

If she has a Buddy List already then show may have to delete this.

This may include going to ~/Library/Preferences and deleting com.apple.ichat.Jabber.plist whilst the app has been Quit

You may also need to set Available in the messages Menu to make the Window show as it will not appear in the Window Menu until you do this.

Hi,

AS in Sierra the Jabber/Google account had to be added in Messages first and then System Preferences I used the item in the Messages menu.

This gave me no Account in Accounts.

It did give me a Buddy List

It also gave the Account listing in the bottom left of the main window.

It did not give me actual Access to chatting.

I then added it in System Preferences > Internet account as the extra Messages Account as the Google option there no longer allows you to link to Messages.

They used different Servers for GoogleTalk compared to Mail (talk.google.com vs gmail.com or googlemail.com depending on your Mail ID)

I then tried everything I could think of to remove the Account.

Quitting the app, removing the item in Internet accounts, removing the com.apple.iChat.Jabber.plist

Various combos of those.

Restarting the app after one session when I had given up (Basically I Shut Down and the Next day I noticed it was gone).

I am not sure what precisely got rid of the account but it went and I now think the effective restart was crucial.

Then I was able to Add it properly in Internet Accounts and it shows in Messages > Preferences > Accounts. Has Buddy List, shows bottom left and can now Chat, with the extra steps below.

I then had to use the Messages Menu > Status to change to Available then I got the Buddy List Window back.

That added the Buddy List at this pint and Added it to the window menu.

Changing the Description in Internet Account got it to read GoogleTalk on the Buddy List window.

Hi,

User uploaded file for the User uploaded file Points

I have had Less Secure apps on at the Google web page since they started doing Two Step Verification.

iChat and Messages had been only using SSL and not the Google Oauth Token for some time.

Whilst I don't remember I must have had the Account Off line at points when I was trying to sort mine.

It was not something I specifically did in the app but Quitting the App, removing the com.apple.iChat.Jabber.plist would normally have removed it. (from Messages) but it probably leaves the Internet Accounts bit showing.

I found the changes on Adding and Removing Accounts somewhat frustrating.

I am glad you are up and running.

Thanks Ralph

I will have another look today.

I did restart after deleting all the history / buddies / messages etc via the terminal command.

Also I did see a comment on one forum where you can goto google server and select "less secure" option to overcome some issue which may prevent access. (which could be the difference between the email address types). Both our accounts are gmail ones.

What I cant recall though is if the jabber active icon was still on at bottom of messages after restart.

Maybe this is the missing piece of the puzzle I overlooked.

I did put adium back on her computer yesterday and it worked first time.

Thanks Ralph.

This does not work unfortunately.

Its a bit odd.

She has the jabber account set up in internet accounts. (I redid it just to be sure)

Going to message app, there is option to add jabber account under messages tab.

And at bottom of screen it shows green icon saying jabber available.

However going into message - accounts, there is no jabber/GT account showing up.

Hi,

I have that in Sierra with two Apple IDs as AIM Screen Names that will not Save for some reason.

A twelve character password is not useful at this point 😁

I have not been able to solve that.

It goes away in High Sierra as there is no AIM and I don't have it as an issue with my Google one.
