Slow Graphics Performance MacOS High Sierra

I decided to downgrade back to Sierra. In case anyone needs it, here's the guide I followed:

Since I don't use Time Machine* I had to download the Sierra installer and create a bootable drive on a USB stick. Those instructions are also linked in the article above.

After downgrading, I can attest that I am not experiencing any of the same graphics issues or overall sluggishness in High Sierra. I guess I'll be sticking to this macOS version indefinitely.

* In Sierra I used to use Crashplan. When I upgraded to High Sierra, I decided to give Arq + BackBlaze a try. Sticking with Arq + BackBlaze for now.

I have heard that the NVidia WebDrivers make things slightly better, and would be a relatively painless stop-gap solution until Apple releases updated drivers in an OS update that fixes this (especially compared to reverting to Sierra). Unfortunately, I could not test this myself as the drivers are bound to stable High Sierra versions (10.13.0, 10.13.1), and would not work with the Betas I was using.

I would encourage everyone with the issue to contact support and make sure that Apple is aware of this and is prioritising it. The machines with problems are 3-4 years old now, and so won't be getting priority testing internally (as demonstrated by the issue in the first place), worse some users might just think "Ah well, it's a few years old, was bound to slow down at some point..." and not report the issue at all. In my conversations with them last week, they seemed to think this issue didn't not exist, and I had to jump through a lot of hoops to convince them that it was related to the specific hardware used in my machine, and not a fault etc...

After upgrading to High Sierra, my computer slowed down to almost being unusable. I spoke to 12 different senior advisors and did everything they said. Nothing fixed it. The slowdown is most noticeable when I connect to an external monitor. Apple refuses to acknowledge the problem.

No one can really answer that question for you.

The most prudent thing to do would be to return to the previous version that was rock solid and worked for you. But that is complex, and requires a Trusted backup, or two, as an older version of MacOS will not install over a newer version unless you completely erase the drive, which deletes all your files.

The most expedient thing would be to try the downloaded Drivers available from NVIDIA, and see if they allow you to get your work done is a reasonable fashion. That may be little risky, as they have not been hammered on by Apple.

A compromise between the two would be to muddle along, doing whatever you can, and wait for the "official" drivers to be issued by Apple.

Each path has its risks and benefits.

The fact that you can boot in Safe Mode strongly suggests that you have ****ware installed that is wreaking havoc on your system.

I recommend you make a full backup or two, then erase and install a clean system on your mac.

If you like, just do a clean install on an external drive, and try it out.

If your mac works correctly that way you will know that there is no hardware problem, but a software one.

I have done a full shut down and a total wipeout of the memory reset the mac to factory settings then reinstall high sierra, there is still an issue with the slow graphics. Computer is running a little bit faster due to the big cleaning of the memory.

FCP X 10.4 works fine here with High Sierra (already did in 10.13.2, still does in 10.13.3).

I don't know which version you have; of older versions of FCP X, only 10.3.4 was even supported, and it had its issues. 10.4 has been pretty solid from the start.

Everything graphics related seems snappier with 10.13.3 (2014 15" rMBP, with NVIDIA graphics).

I never experienced the most severe symptoms described in this thread, but I did see slower graphics performance vis a vis Sierra. It seems fixed now...

Well, there is something I haven’t mentioned before!!!

After erasing my HD and re-installing El Capitan, I wrote in this forum that everything was back to normal, which is almost the truth…

The lagging problem is all solved, but my MBP is getting too hot very quickly. Which wasn’t the case before.

I did all the different resets suggested, and nothing helped.

I was thinking perhaps this has something to do with a firmware update that happened while updating to High Sierra, which is not reversible anymore.

I am using an USB fan tablet just incase and all is good, but was wondering if anyone had a similar issues?

@plochner I have severe UI lag on High Sierra at times and have have never touched the scaled setting once (and I would imagine it's a small minority who do). I've a Nvidia 750m on a mid-2014 Macbook Pro and it's been running at native resolution since day one. I'm just pointing this out incase somebody misinterprets your post to suggest that selecting 'scaled' is definitely creating the problem, whereas it appears to be affecting the situation on only certain hardware.

I am pretty sure Apple has been getting an earful from all sources on the sad state of these Drivers, especially for the slightly older Hardware.

If you are a developer yourself, you must also appreciate that working in a Lab, with your instruments applied, able to insert test code and stop in the middle can give far faster results than chasing down symptoms from uncontrolled reports from the field.

If there were a need for more info, there is nothing from stopping Engineering from jumping all over this forum and messaging everyone who might have additional (yet unseen) information. But they also have easy availability from friendly National Accounts and Educational Accounts, with large populations of specific model Macs available if needed.

the nVidia Webdriver really does improve the situation on my macbook pro with the 750m GPU in it. The performance-issues are still there but the entire situation is significantly improved compared to the stock drivers provided by Apple in 13.3.3

10.13.4 just came out and I installed it. The discrete GPU now seems to be actually faster than the integrated one sometimes, and switching desktops no longer results in a slideshow. The three-finger-swipe-window-overview-thing used to stutter badly but is now also buttery smooth.

Now, let's hope Apple doesn't break graphics again in 10.14...
