microphones only works when close up

Hey Siri and using Siri only works when my mouth is an inch from the phone. Dictation works only so so at a normal distance. Frequently doesn’t work, either. Phone calls are fine. What could be the issue? iPhone 7. iOS 11.1. This is without a case or screen protector.
