TextEdit hangs while saving a new "Readme.txt" file in a new folder

I've just found something weird about TextEdit.

To reproduce do as follows:

  1. launch TextEdit
  2. click New Document or choose New from File menu
  3. type in some text
  4. choose Save from File menu
  5. click New Folder
  6. name the new folder as you wish
  7. make sure the option 'if no extension is provided, use ".txt"' is checked
  8. in Save As text field "Untitled" is highlighted
  9. type in "Readme" so that "Untitled" will be substituted
  10. click Save or press ENTER

TextEdit hangs and you have to force quit it

the workaround is to delete "Untitled.txt" and type in "Readme.txt" in step 9

PS same effect with "Leggimi" which means Readme in Italian

It is fun, isn't it? but a bug nevertheless...

I am currently using High Sierra but I've seen the same problem also in Sierra

MacBook Air (13-inch Mid 2013), macOS High Sierra (10.13.1)

I followed your instructions, opened TextEdit created a new document, chose save as, titled it scrivere and chose a new folder (called current event), the result is that I have a file called scrivere, in a new folder called current event (inside the documents folder), so I am unable to duplicate the issue.

I also am using HS.
