Mission Control in El Capitan 10.11.6 doesn't restore Spaces

Hi

I'm on a Mac Pro (early 2008). I use the Mission Control feature in conjunction with third-party Finder-alternative, "Pathfinder". I regularly have 11 'virtual spaces' with multiple folder open in each for ongoing projects.

My issue is that after a restart, Mission Control 'loses' all the folders allocated to the 11 spaces and clumps them all together into a single space.

I've had ongoing discussions with the Pathfinder developer and a forum user posted this:

Not a Path Finder user but I came across this bug while researching it with respect to Chrome (and other apps). I figured I'd let you guys know what I've found out through various bug reports filed with Apple. Here's what I've found:

I added two separate bugs about this to Apple's Bug Report system:

  1. 21488847 - Inconsistent Window Restoration with Spaces on App Restart
  2. 21489567 - Inconsistent Non-Apple App Window Restoration with Spaces on Reboot

I received responses from Apple on both of them. Here are those responses:

On App Restart Ignoring Spaces (21488847):

"This issue behaves as intended based on the following: Application restart does not preserve space assignment. We are now closing this bug report.

If you have questions about the resolution, or if this is still a critical issue for you, then please update your bug report with that information.

Please be sure to regularly check new Apple releases for any updates that might affect this issue."

On System Reboot, Apps Ignore Spaces (21489567):

We have determined that this is an issue for you to resolve. These sound like bugs in [apps that I listed, including Chrome].

That is, if they’re trying to do their own state restoration and not going through NSWindow, the space isn’t going to be restored.

These apps need to use NSWindow’s encodeRestorableStateWithCoder: and restoreStateWithCoder:.

Please let us know whether the issue is resolved for you by updating your bug report."

According to Apple QA and Apple's own Application behavior with respect to Spaces, it appears that Spaces restoration during reboot is entirely possible with standard APIs while Spaces restoration during basic Application restart (quit+reopen) doesn't work by design.

My guess is that Apple can't guarantee that the layout of Spaces won't change between the time an Application is quit and then reopened, but it can during a reboot. There are definitely ways that this could be handled but Apple does not appear to have prioritized the feature.

At the very least it appears that Path Finder could be updated to work like Apple apps and restore to correct Spaces across system reboot (if it doesn't already...)!

My query is: can anyone confirm that the 10.11.6 El Capitan Mission Control restores Spaces (virtual desktops/windows) correctly with multple folders in each Space after a restart?

cheers

After 2 days of testing, have had mixed results. Here's a summary:

- have uninstalled PathFinder Finder-alternative;

- have updated all login apps to latest versions;

- removed all of my System Prefs>Users>Login Items and reinstalled one at a time, refreshed caches etc with Cocktail and then reboots inbetween;

- ran Lingon X to disable any legacy startups/logins/daemons etc;

- Reboots with Shift key (Safe Boot mode) to the Finder windows and Mission Control/Spaces allocated correctly;

- Reboots without Shift key to Finder windows and Mission Control/Spaces loaded erratically;

- looked as if Default Folder and/or SnapzPro X might have been implicated but on successive de-installs the reboot sometimes caused Mission Control/Spaces with Finder windows to allocate properly and at other times Mission Control lost all of its Finder windows

- I've checked Libraries' Startup Items, Extensions, Preference Panes etc

I've cleaned up my system a little and update some apps but, overall, I still haven't nailed the problem except to say that each time I use the Safe Boot mode then Mission Control/Space and allocated Finder windows works. Must be something in the login process

If anybody's got any ideas, I'd much appreciate it

Try running this program in your normal account, then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy Report” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

I would uninstall Cocktail. It tends to interfere with the computer's operation while providing minimal to no benefit.

I've done some more testing. After having uninstalled PathFinder, I logged into my Mac Pro (early 2008) in Safe Boot mode (disabled most non-essential startup items (logins/kernel extensions). Opened relevant Finder windows in a number of Spaces and restarted in Safe Boot. Tried several restarts, same process, and Mission Control doesn't restore any of my previously open Finder windows in their respective Spaces.

I also checked my iMac (2012) with High Sierra and Mission Control works fine.

Looks like something specific to my Mac Pro hardware/software

Something in your 3rd party software is likely causing the problem as you have found out in your testing.

Unless you are willing to remove the 3rd party software, I doubt things will work correctly. One option you might consider is booting into the Recovery Partition, erasing/reformatting the drive, and do a clean install. Reboot normally, set up your Spaces, and then reboot to see if the Spaces load as desired. If they do, reinstall your 3rd party software until you can determine what is causing the problem. That will take time.

Eric, I've left my system as is, for the time being, that includes:

• Cocktail; and

• PathFinder, Default Folder, SnapzPro X etc

I've presently got 12 MC virtual desktops with 11 of them having numerous Finder Windows open/allocated
