visual voicemail not working on Verizon iPhone 7

Recently purchased a google pixel 2 and switched the SIM card from my existing iPhone 7 (Verizon) to the google phone - activated the pixel but decided that I prefer the iPhone and switched the SIM card back and reactivated the iPhone - no issues. However, the visual voicemail functionality disappeared and voicemail messages now result in an unintelligible text message and no voicemail indicator. Additionally, in the voicemail app there is no option to setup VVM, only to "Call Voicemail". There are voicemails but no indicator. I've done all recommended procedures - e.g. reset network settings, hard phone reset, etc. Updated to iOS 11.1 and verified carrier settings are up to date. Also, posted this same question on the Verizon board and was told to ask Apple. Thoughts?
