Passwords not restored from iCloud backup

Migrated from a 6s to 8 today, restoring from iCloud backup. It wasn't a good experience.

I've had to reenter most of my credentials. When I restored in the past from an iTunes encrypted backup most of them were preserved. I thought iCloud backups always restored passwords.

Any guesses what went wrong?

The support article on using encrypted iTunes backups as a way to save/restore passwords says that iCloud backups are "always encrypted" --- which I took to mean that they included passwords.

There are more things wrong with my i8. Spotlight search is very slow; search on app names can fail. I last saw that with an i6 and iOS 10. I wonder if I have a hardware problem; I am leaning to returning the phone.

Do you still have your 6s?

Should be this case, I would try to back it up to your computer running iTunes 12.7.1 or later.

Then restore your new 8 to factory settings, so you can install a fresh copy of iOS 11.1. Set it up as new.

Finally restore all your data from your previous backup via iTunes.

Thanks! I'm back on my 6s as we write --- restoring everything from my encrypted iTunes backup. Already a far better experience. Everything working. Spotlight search instantaneous.

I think that i8 had a hardware issue. I'm returning it. If there's an X available I might get it, otherwise I'll wait a month or two and see. Really the upgrade was driven by my son needing a 5s update, I might look for a used 6s for him and stay with my 6s for another year. I do like the 6s; I didn't love the haptic home button.

Yes I do sync keychain. The restore from iTunes today to my 6s was much smoother than my experience restoring from iCloud to my 8 yesterday, but I did find many passwords were not still backed up. I wonder if Apple used to back up credentials differently, but sometime in the past few years moved to keychain sync only. Perhaps apps that don't use keychain for credentials need to have password reentry.
