itunes stuttering during playback

Playing itunes thru my Mac is becoming unbearable. If I just touch it to do something the playback stutters. Using the interface isn't much better. Any click is usually greeted with 2-3 second busy beachball.

I have been ripping my CD's to a NAS with the itunes itl on the macbook with 1tb of SSID. My library is fairly large at last count about 46,000 items using 1 tb. (i can see this number doubling in the near future)

Playback thru AppleTV 4 is fine.

I've checked the activity monitor and nothing seems pegged out, cpu, network, disk io all seem normal.

I have 16gb of memory and that seems all used up but then it always seems that way.

All other apps seem to run fine.

any suggestions?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

I have a similar problem. I am using an iPhone 7 streaming my music library using wireless Carplay to an Alpine ilx-107 in my truck. I have noticed that a few seconds after the stream starts, it will glitch a couple times. Then it's fine until I get a text message that I reply to. Once I send the message with Siri, the music resumes and in a few seconds it will glitch a couple times. I first thought I had bad rips but I could count the seconds to the glitches after the text messages.
