How to export Aperture library from TM to new computer?

My old MBP crashed the other day and I cannot get it to work at all.

I'm still running Aperture and I have Time Machine for backups (as well as Carbon Copy Cloner on an external USB drive).

I've been waiting to do the switch from Aperture to Lightroom since it seem's so "scary" and complicated.

My problem is now that I don't know how to export my Aperture library to the new computer since my old computer has crashed.

Is it possible to just start up my new MBP (that I have just ordered from Apple but haven't received yet) and choose to restore to a TM copy? I've read that newer OSX versions don't support Aperture?

I've also read in a thread that if the library is "managed" rather than "referenced" you are supposed to be able to import the folders from a TM backup and the library should be okay? Even if that is true, how do I import this into Lightroom then? I'm also not completely sure if my library is managed or not, but I think so.

I was also planning to re-save all photos to not loose all the adjustments I've made in Aperture, something that I cannot do anymore I guess, since I won't be able to use Aperture om ny new computer...?

I'm so frustrated and confused right now and I would appreciate any help I can get!

Deep breath. It's not as awful as you think it is - after all you have back ups.

Aperture does run on the most recent OS, tho some things glitch a little.

Lightroom will import and convert an Aperture library - not perfectly, see the Adobe website for more.

Now all we need to do is recover the Aperture Library.

How to restore all aperture photos from Time Machine

Though it might all be easier if you have the Aperture library also backed up with CCC.

1. This will only restore the Library. If you want the application you need to reinstall it. Restoring an application may not get all the dependencies that it requires.

2. I won't try list the few, but have a read of the last 10 or 15 threads on this forum, they'll pretty much cover them.

3. Because CCC makes a "plain format" back up all you need do is move it to the new machine, there's no need to restoring.

Thanks for the fast reply!

However, I have a few follow-up questions:

1) If I follow the instructions in your link on a previous thread on how to import my library from TM, does this also mean that the Aperture program itself will be installed on my new computer, along with my library? Or do I need to first install it (is it still available for download by the way?)

2) What are the glitches for using Aperture on newer OSX versions? Will these glitches mean that there are any risks in importing my library and then switching to Lightroom or is it still safe to do? I guess it should be, but I'm curious about the glitches.

3) I do have another backup with CCC, though not as recent as my TM. I backed up with TM the same morning that my computer broke down, but I haven't backed up with CCC for a while. I usually make a backup with CCC "manually", i.e. with no schedule applied to automate it since I use a USB drive that I only plugin once it's needed for backing up.

What makes it easier using CCC? It sound pretty easy with TM.

What if I just choose to go into TM (after having unboxed my new computer) and choose to restore everything from the last TM backup? Then I should have access to my entire computer as it was before it crashed, right?

Is that the only option for me to be able to have access to Aperture at all?

Since I cannot re-download it from App Store (right?) and since I cannot access my old computer and "drag and drop" the Aperture application to the Applications folder of my new computer (as I'vre read that you can do if the old computer still works).

I do have a few applications that I would prefer not to have transferred onto the new computer, but I guess that it would be best to just try to restore the entire computer from my backup...?

Or would it be possible to only restore Aperture and the library through TM and use CCC for my other stuff (documents/files) and choose what to import to my new MBP?

If you bought Aperture from the App Store then you should be able to re-download it from there. Check your purchases list. I've never recommended copying app from one machine to another. Just installing it, and being sure of getting all the bits, should be just as fast, frankly.

Yes, you should be able to restore from the TM to the new machine. I'd ask on the Using High Sierra (which is the OS the new machine will have) forum for more on that.
