PDF file is damaged and cannot be opened, is there anyway to recover it?

I was using preview to edit a PDF file when suddenly the application was not responding so I forced quit and now this comes up "It may be damaged or use a file format that Preview doesn’t recognise" whenever I try to open the pdf. This has occured more than once and I don't know the reason. I really need this pdf file... please help!
