Weird request to enter my Mac password on my iPad

I just restored the iTunes backup of an iPad Air 2 to a iPad mini 2. After asking me for my Apple ID password once, I was asked a second time. Once I entered it, the iPad mini 2 put up this dialog:

User uploaded file

It says:

Enter Mac Password

Enter the password you use to unlock the Mac "********".

This password protects your Apple ID, saved passwords, and other data stored in iCloud. Your password is encrypted and cannot be read by Apple.

I was dubious. A call to Apple's tech support revealed that this is a Continuity feature and legitimate. I just wanted to document this here.

I don't know that it's true that the device must be turned on. I've received requests for the password for devices that no longer exist, or that have been reformatted, and entering the password works fine.

I am surprised that it keeps asking though; in my experience, you can cancel with no ill effect except having to re-verify your iCloud keychain.

My question is, is my actual login password being transmitted to Apple, or just a hash or something?
