No service after iOS 11 update

iPhone 6 Plus getting searching or no service. I can make phone calls/iMessage while on WiFi. I’ve tried these steps:

1. Turn on/off, hard shut off as well.

2. Turn on/off airplane mode, cellular, LTE, roaming.

3. Reset network settings.

4. Reset all settings. (Worked for a day only).

5. Update to 11.1 iOS and 30.1 carrier update.

6. Check time and date settings.

7. Took out SIM card.

8. Took off case.

9. No water damages.

10. Restore (Worked for a day).

Looked at multiple sites and so far it still says searching. AT&T account is good. I have 5 iPhones on my account and they have not updated and they still work. (iPhone 5s, 6, 6, 7, 7). Trying to avoid going to the Apple store as I know they will probably throw a $320 charge as I’m out of warranty. Any tips is welcomed!

This is my experienced SOLUTION for the intermittent and consistent "No Service or Searching" and Cellular Data/Cellular Network connectivity issue on one of my company’s mobile device. Problem was not a device software/hardware issue, which is especially demonstrated for those who have a new device or have performed a full device reset. Apologies in advance for the lengthy reply and hope this steers you as well as others towards a permanent resolution.

Device Information was incorrectly logged in the wireless carrier's system.

Step 1 - Accurately confirm your Device Information. First, go to Settings>Phone to view My Number (phone number). Second, go to Settings>General>About to view the device's Serial #, IMEI, ICCID, etc. IMEI=International Mobile Equipment Identity and this 15-digit serial # differs from the manufacturer’s serial #. ICCID=Integrated Circuit Card Identifier and this 20-digit # directly references the SIM card that's physically installed in device’s external port.

Step 2 - Contact your wireless carrier and ask them to verify that pertinent device info is respectively aligned. Just an FYI, a carrier’s system may demonstrate info correctly, but a refresh of info may be required in their system so that correct functionality is stimulated. ASK THEM TO CLEAR OUT ALL OF THEIR LOGGED FIELDS FOR DEVICE INFO AND RE-ENTER THE INFO. They should also ask you to power down your device during this process. Begin with the basic info assigned in their system, such as phone number and iPhone 5, 5S, 6, 6S, 7, 8, X. Next, confirm the serialized type info. ICCID is critical. Be prepared to replace the carrier’s provided SIM card should the ICCID not match their system. Once device is powered up and is functioning correctly through cellular service ONLY, it’s also a good time to ensure that the Visual Voicemail is functioning. You or they, using another phone, can leave a test voicemail.

***Resolution steps above makes assumptions of mobile device general readiness.***

Refer to https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201415. I’m sure I’ve missed some, but a few examples of readiness are as follows:

Device isn’t damaged.

Device appropriate SIM card is correctly installed.

Device cellular is turned on and cellular settings within device are correctly configured.

Device software is updated to iOS 8 or later version.

Device is manufactured specifically for and/or approved for use through wireless carrier.

Within wireless carrier service area and no cellular outages.

Wireless carrier account is in good standing/active and there isn't service type block referencing your device's IMEI. Blocks/blacklisting logged by wireless carrier can be from device reported as lost or stolen.

Carrier Settings update has been installed on device. If cellular or Wi-Fi service is available when checking Carrier version installed, you’ll see a pop up window for a Carrier Settings Update Available. Go to Settings>General>About and wait a few moments. Apply this update whenever it’s available.

Cheers & Good Luck!

Finally, if you can't use your cell coverage for whatever reason & have wifi, enable WiFi calling, so you can at least send and receive calls for the time being using WiFi.

I put my nan on this yesterday as her calls kept dropping. Her at&t service would go up to 2 bars max but quickly revert to 1 bar and stay there primarily.

So, I put her on WiFi calling and am checking in with at&t in-store due to pushback via phone and then, with her tomorrow on her coverage in general and her carrier settings on her device. Can't have my nan with no phone nor service, even if it means putting her on my plan or with my provider 😉

UPDATE****** after i was unable to restore my device in DFU mode i contacted apple support via chat and was greeted with another Advisor who had no idea what was really going on with my phone. After about 45 mins of chatting, i finally asked to be transferred to someone with a little more knowledge about the subject and got senior advisor Brandon. I told him my previous problem and how i was trying a DFU restore and was getting errors such as "Iphone not found" and "Error 4016". Right after Brandon say my Iphone was in warranty and that error 4016 was a hardware issue for sure. I hope this helps you guys fix your issue!

iPad Pro 12.9 LTE (ATT) w/Logitech Create Keyboard case.

Since updating to even the latest iOS 11 update, I consistently (but still randomly) have the the following issues:

1.) After waking (opening Logitech Create case), iPad shows "No Service"

2.) iPad requires entering passcode, even though other parameters requiring passcode entry have not been triggered. (I.e, it hasn't been 24hrs, etc. Fingerprint touch SHOULD still work.

3.) Lightining charging with Apple cable and charger will just stop charging. Disconnect/Reconnect (unplug/plug) will fix temporarily.

Hard reset fixes the "No Service” temporarily....until it happens again, and only a hard reset fixes it.

No carrier update is showing available.

I'm convinced there is some bug in iOS 11 causing this. It is rather annoying to have to hard reset the iPad every time this happens. It is also annoying to have to make sure to check the iPad is still charging thru the Apple cable and charger. Hard reset seems to make no difference on the charging part...it is just something I've noticed along with the "No Service".

I do not (and should not have to) reset my network settings. I have two VPN connections that are a pain to have to set up again after a network settings reset, and frankly, everything was working fine in iOS 10. (One VPN setting is thru a NETGEAR router, and requires transferring the OpenVPN settings files thru iTunes...which, AFAICT isn't even an option anymore with the latest iTunes.

Since Steve is gone, Apple quality control has DRASTICALLY gone down hill, and I am thankful that I still have (mostly) Pre-Tim Cook Apple HW. I used to be an Apple Fan-boy, enthusiast, and advocate. Can't say that anymore. It seems we techno geeks have been forgotten by the latest Apple regime. Problem is, what is the alternative? (For laptop, latest 13in HP Spectre 360 quad-core is looking mighty compelling. And the fact is, Windows 10 ain't bad. My issue is that I'm fairly tied to Apple eco-system, and it would be a major pain to have to redo my setups. Can't we have the board fire Tim, and get another "Steve”at the helm? (Jon Ivy?).

OK...sorry...rant over....bottom line is that my iPad Pro issues are related to iOS 11, and Apple needs to address them...

Sure (I'll do my best) :)

First, I definitely took the long route bc I figured I just needed to and am stubborn and possibly rushed through some steps and/or skipped some. I want devices fixed...drives me mad especially when I truly feel I must've overlooked something, etc. Plus I still felt the carrier (tech rep) could make other adjustments if I took the time to give good feedback, so just a head's up on the VERY lengthy explanation, etc

Step 1) Spoke with carrier rep in tech support first. We went step by step through each of the carrier settings, including all identifying info for the device. Rep made sure all info aligned.

We did basic troubleshooting as I'd done before and yep, even reset all network settings again.

One thing we did a bit different than I had done previously, was turn off data roaming - when he had me do this, the signal came up and searching ceased.

But, he still wanted me to toggle back on, so I did.

When I turned it back on, searching returned, no service. :( ....but, I had some hope now.

At this point, I didn't go into the data roaming reasoning and asking all sorts of questions. Instead, I just asked him, what if we do a fresh update in iTunes (I was on 11.2.2 already) then restore as new? Do you think it might help now? Carrier tech was on board but wasn't fully confident with guiding me through the restore process.

He contacted Apple, the two techs reviewed steps done so far, I gave feedback as needed, and after getting all info, the Apple tech stated everything seemed on point so far and felt confident with a new update & restore at this point. She explained that she was going to walk me through the update and restore, but she was going to have me complete it a bit different than the standard process. (Fine with me. Anything I could try, I was willing at this point and grateful).

She stated we were going to complete the processes in more definitive stages than what I had tried.

First - we made sure my iTunes was updated to 12.7.2. It was. We then put device in recovery mode while plugged into iTunes.

She then made sure I did a sw update ONLY.

After allowing update to process, we let phone restart. After restart, we disconnected phone from iTunes, and she had me plug phone back in (put device in recovery mode again to bring up restore prompt in iTunes).

We initiated a restore. (Sidenote) It never prompted to update, which I still expected but nope. It only began to process a restore, which the Apple tech stated is the result we want right now.

**Other: iTunes errors would pop up (think i got 3-4 spontaneous ones pop up total) but Apple tech had me close error boxes, proceed with the process, and it was as if no errors existed. They never repopulated. That was a first on iTunes and a nice one!

However, there was one restore error that did appear and couldn't be overridden by closing & continuing. She fixed this first, then had me simply start the restore process again and the error did not appear again.

Restore only completed on second try.

At this point, we unplugged and set up the device as NEW.

Restarted device

Then, they both had me go to Settings - General- About - then carrier rep stopped us and had us wait for approx 15 seconds. A carrier update popped up to prompt to update.

Carrier rep & Apple tech both asked me to go forth.

I allowed carrier update to run which didn't take long.

Restarted device again

The service on the phone began to show. Searching had not returned but my signal finally had.

I got excited but was told to hold on...still wanted to check on something.

We all waited a few minutes, then carrier rep had me toggle the data roaming off, wait...I still had service. Then, carrier rep had me toggle it back on. Service remained.

No issues since. No more searching. Signal is fine

This was on an iPhone 7 with Verizon.

Since then, I've helped with two iPhone 6 models and a 7 plus. All were refurbished devices.

I made sure I did each step as I was shown and in the order I recalled. I never deviated.

I'm thrilled, to put it mildly and the process is not bad if the connection on the Mac or PC is good in particular.

Please note however, that this issue may not relate specifically to your device or issue. Thus, it may not suit what you need nor resolve the problem.

Also, be sure to backup your data beforehand if you plan on trying it, so you can access it elsewhere. I've since brought over some of the phone's data but did not restore the apps. I redownloaded the apps again instead from the App store. I did bring back Apple music with no issue however, by re-enabling iCloud music library. Basically, I didn't want to chance any possible corrupt data or incompatible data from former backup info to cause any problems and as a precaution, so I was very selective.

****One more thing that I would try before going this process as a possible fix, is to turn off your data roaming and see if this stops the phone from searching.

This may be all you need to do. Again, it depends on your needs and issue.

Basically, the devices I've dealt with on this issue, all needed to have the carrier info checked and corrected as needed by the carrier.

Data roaming was the most prevalent and consistent issue that set the phone into persistent searching/no service mode.

The carrier update installed AFTER updating the device sw, then restoring as new, seemed to be another vital thing/step needed. If you get prompted to update during the process, go ahead and do the update btw.

Finally, completing the steps in a specific order is important. Starting by running the sw update first, by itself on iTunes, then cleaning up the device and not restoring potentially corrupt data from previous backups seemed to only help the device pick up on what the cell service and its settings needed & vice-versa. Essentially, the two seemed to communicate effectively this time and could then work together. Ex: I was never prompted for a carrier update in the past after an update or restore, until this time.

And, can't say it enough, data roaming was definitely causing an issue (on the devices I worked with)

Bottom line though? I couldn't have done this in the first place without the carrier and Apple techs having the patience and knowledge to work with me on this. I tried this several times in the past to no avail, but I now know there were things I wasn't thorough enough on, didn't think to check, and so on.

Again, try turning off data roaming. Ya' never know. This may fix your issue straight away!

If not, there's the entire history of what fixed the 7 and how I've been able to fix three others thus far.

Truly hope it helps those who this could be applicable to in stopping the phone from searching and gaining your cell service back

Best of luck!

So I've just confirmed this is an iOS 11 issue and not a carrier issue or hardware issue and here's how. I usually update my phone when new updates come out. Ever since ios 11 first came out my phone service has been complete crap, but I couldn't tell if it was coincidence or actually ios 11. I've tried everything to fix it, all the resets, brand new SIM card, talked to my carrier, you name it I've done it. I used to have super fast LTE in my house, now it's worse than 56k dial up (for those of you that even remember what that is). My girlfriend on the other hand rarely updates her phone (still on iOS 10). She's always had great service in our house (like I used to). Today I stupidly convinced her to update to iOS 11 so we could send money with Apple Pay so she did. Guess what!? POOF her phone service is now complete crap just like mine. This makes me so mad. She's so mad at me for ruining her phone by telling her to upgrade. We both have iPhone 7's btw. Here's the icing on the cake, when my friend comes over with his iPhone X on the same carrier and same iOS he has perfect service!!!. FIX THIS **** APPLE!!

Jan 22, 2018 10:41 PM in response to slikwilly13

So, if his Apple device is fine, it's quite contradictory to put the fault on Apple, especially with you noting his iphone X device has no issues

The good news is Apple techs are always willing to help regardless if it's carrier related or not - they'll do whatever is within their power to help. I've found them to be very forthright also. They tell me like it is and I know where I stand. In turn, I'm very clear as to what steps to take next whether I like the response or not. At least I know what the status is, with nothing covert about it.

I use both iOS and Android for both work & personal use. Every single flipping time I get no signal or searching, it has been a carrier issue. HOWEVER, that is my personal experience. Every situation is unique.

I still call both (carrier & Apple or Samsung regarding personal devices) ideally to troubleshoot. 95% of the time (minimum), my carrier does troubleshooting to fix on my devices which fixes it short term or long term. And, I either have this issue often for a while or not at all....it goes in spurts for my own devices. Regardless, getting a carrier tech typically fixes it for a bit until my signal decides to do it's own thing again.

I was lucky for a LONG time with my old galaxy 4 for example after it initially behaved in this manner years ago. Then, I upgraded to the 8 plus, and I began to experience this again; same with an iPhone 5 and iPhone 8. I rely on WiFi at home. My iPhone and Android are both great at work - my searching and signal issues are moot there/zero problems. At this point, I'm okay with it....I cope, fix when I can, etc. I use WiFi calling at home and again, I just cope and manage. It's become so less unnerving to me than when I first experienced the issue (twice now for sure - both times during the early stages of owning the devices)

Regarding the iPhone 6 and especially the iPhone7 devices I've worked with Verizon on and Apple ( at the same time).... I just don't know but together, we got something right. I know I got the steps and overall process done just right on these devices to fix, due to taking notes from troubleshooting via Verizon and Apple techs working together as stated. I took those notes from them and applied to other devices to fix this issue.

There are some with other carriers I've had zero success with however and unfortunately.

I'm hoping to see some progress in the future, no matter who the carriers or manufacturers are. I mean, I think we all want and deserve a steady cell signal - bottom line.

Jan 29, 2018 6:49 AM in response to TAL95

I just went through this whole ordeal, so I figured I'd post my findings for everyone else.

FACTS:

- Upgraded to iPhone 7 128 gig on Verizon in October 2016.

- Phone worked flawlessly through January 24th 2018. Phone was always kept in a case and no physical damage was apparent or visible.

- Initiated update to iOS 11.2.5 on January 24th 2018 while at work & connected to work wifi.

- I've updated at work numerous times before.

- About half way through the phone auto restarting to compete update, the phone appeared to restart again and I received a message that the phone needed to connect to iTunes.

- Downloaded iTunes to my work computer and connected the phone via an apple lightning cable.

- Selected 'update iPhone software', which failed. I was then prompted to restore iPhone to factory settings.

- About half way through the restart, I received an error message (-1) that the restore had failed. I repeated the process again with the same result.

- Attempted to restore from my home PC twice (I was thinking the network at my office might interfere somehow). I received the same error message on these attempts (-1)

- Took phone to the apple store. The door check-in guy tried to restore and got the same error (-1).

- Apple tech attempted to restore to factory settings - this time successfully. Phone appeared to functioning flawlessly as I left the apple store.

- Once I got home and started to restore based on my iCloud backup, the phone repeatedly failed to restore.

- I then used my iPad to initiate the restore - which seemed to be successful. However I began to have carrier connection issues.

ANALYSIS

- For a couple days the phone would connect to the carrier sporadically. I started to read through the various threads on apple support here to try to determine if this was a hardware or software issue. As most folks are reporting, my phone would switch between 'searching' and 'No Network'.

- I was usually able to get the phone to connect the carrier for a short time if I removed the SIM card for a few minutes then reinserted it and restarted the phone. However no matter how long I left the SIM card out, the phone never threw a 'SIM not detected' error. I left the SIM out overnight without generating any error.

- I took the phone to a Verizon store on January 27th and had a new SIM installed. The Verizon tech indicated she had seen dozens of these cases in the last few weeks, and was hesitant to update the iOS on her own phone for this reason.

- The new SIM had a similar effect to removing and reinserting the old one - connection to the carrier was restored for a few minutes.

- I took the phone back to the apple store straight from the verizon store.

- Apple tech attempted to restore to factory settings multiple times and received error code (3) multiple times. He indicated he attempted two different types of restore, neither of which were successful.

- The tech noted no physical damage, but did point out there was a slight separation between the bottom left antenna ring and the main boy of the phone. I could see this as well and it was very slight - hairline.

- I paid the $ for a new iPhone 7 128 gig. Which has been working fine for the last couple days. Below are the notes on my work order:

Problem Description/Diagnosis

Issue:
• customer reports after an update his hone stopped connection to the carrier signal and it shows no service
• customer reports contacting the carrier and and having a new SIM card provisioned.
• customer reports issue persists with a new sim
• customer reports attempting multiple restores and receiving error -1

Steps to Reproduce:
• attempted restore and set up as new
• received error 3 while performing a DFU restore twice

Cosmetic Condition:
• visible Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is not triggered, no damage or wear noted.

Proposed Resolution:
• replace device out of warranty

CONCLUSION

- I'm certain this was not the result of damage to the phone.

- I'm not sure if this was a software or hardware issue. If it was a software issue, it stands to reason that my new phone would be experiencing the same issues since it was restored via the backup of my old phone, and is an identical model.

- It does seem quite strange that many phones from different generations would be experiencing this issue at the same time, which supports the software issue hypothesis.

- If it is a hardware issue, it's something inherent in the design. It's also something that can manifest slowly over time and from regular use. I didn't find too much chatter related to this issue prior to iOS 11 release which seems odd if it is indeed a hardware issue.

- at the end of the day I'm about $300 poorer, and a I see no reason this couldn't crop up again just outside the 90 day warranty of this new phone. It's frustrating that these devices are not warrantied for two years which seems to be normal upgrade cycle.

I hope this was helpful to anyone experiencing the same issues.

Jan 29, 2018 12:13 PM in response to TAL95

Folks,

Just an update here on my prior posting. Hopefully this may help others...

My issue with this "symptom" was specific to my 12.9 iPad Pro, and I've not had this issue on any other devices. (See my prior posts).

That being the case, I can confirm that since swapping out my Logitech Create Smart-connector keyboard case, I have NOT seen the "No Service" issue manifest since. I've replaced the Logitech case with a Cooper Cases blue-tooth clam-shell, and have not missed a beat since.

Take that information as you will. My interpretation is that my issue is most likely different from the issue others are seeing & reporting here, and was somehow related to iOS 11 update coupled with having a Logitech Create Smart-Connector keyboard case. Since replacing the Logitech, all is perfectly well, and I couldn't be more happy with the new Cooper case. (We can have that discussion elsewhere...suffice to say, I'm VERY disappointed in the Apple endorsed Logitech Create case...for this and other reasons (poor plastics choice). We'll see how the cooper cases Aluminum case holds up over time, but so far it is superior to the logitech Create, at ~$50 less than I paid for the Create. )

Anyway, just wanted to post to give an update on my particular issue. Since it seems that swapping out my iPad 12.9 keyboard case for a non-smart-connector keyboard case fixed my problem, I don't think my problem is the same as others here. I will say that I still believe it is related to iOS 11 update, but in my case is probably specific to something having to do with the Smart Connector.

Good luck everybody, and I hope that Apple comes clean with what what changed in iOS 11 to cause these kinds of problems. I don't think they will, but we can hope. I still firmly believe we need the Apple Board to find another CEO with "Steve Jobs"-like insight and passion for the products and company... It is abundantly apparent that the "slacker" mind-set is much more predominant under the Cook regime, and being allowed to get away with it. That is just a shame...

Feb 3, 2018 6:47 AM in response to TimAllen78

Apple removed my post!

Resetting the phone will not resolve the issue. Verizon said there is no fix and charged us $700 for a new phone and forced us to mail in the old phone or pay them $200. Who protects the consumer Apple will not provide a resolution and your cellar provider will just take advantage of you.

Contacted Apple due to the fact Verizon took the old phone and and I did not purchase the phone from Apple directly they will not provide a resolution.
