Bad Imei if the owner did not pay off the phone?

I bought an iphone 8 off Ebay. The listing seems legit since it showed the phone is sealed and brand new. It is on AT&T. However, after I sent the payment, I asked the seller if the phone could be unlocked. She said she does not think it could be unlocked.

After receiving her response, I am afraid she might still owed AT&T or might not complete the installment plan yet. So my questions are:

-since the phone is sealed in the box, can she still report this phone as lost or stolen?

-if she does not complete the installment plan, will AT&T disable or blacklist the phone?

She just shipped to phone today but I have not received the phone yet. If I will not be able to use the phone after 2 or 3 months, because she didn't pay her debt, I will file a claim with ebay.

I looked everywhere but do not seem to find any answers.

Thank you

iPhone 8

Return it for a refund. If the seller refuses, file a claim with eBay. There is a good chance it's been reported lost or stolen or that the seller skipped out on their contract. (yes, it can be reported stolen if the box is unopened... it happens all the time, and is a common scam. The seller orders a phone, reports it stolen in the post, then sells it and gets a replacement through their carrier).

Do NOT wait several months. eBay has a limit on how long you have to file a claim.

Buy a phone from a legitimate source. If someone is selling an iPhone 8 for less than the full retail price, something is wrong.
