airdrop is irregularly renaming images

i am on OSX 10.11.6 and most recent iOS.

when i send images that were taken SEQUENTIALLY they show up in the downloads folder as irregularly numbered images. so images taken in /sequence/ and should be numbered as +1, +2 etcetera in /order/ are instead randomly organized and numbered in large steps (e.g. IMG_0087.jpg then IMG_0608.jpg etcetera).

this is making life rather difficult.

also, anyone know the best way to determine the way these images are actually named within iOS /before/ it leaves my phone via airdrop so i can decipher this a little better?

THANKS

iPhone 6, iOS 8

Hello hotwheels22,

Thanks for asking the Apple Support Communities about AirDrop renaming files. The only reason I can see a file being renamed is if there is already an image on your computer with the same name. Prior to sending a set of images over using AirDrop, I recommend checking that there aren't any images with the same name saved somewhere on your computer. You will have to check for the file name of every pic in your sequence to AirDrop over.

Once you can ensure every image in the sequence on your iPhone doesn't have something with the same exact name on your Mac using Spotlight, try sending them again. If you find images with the same name, I recommend renaming them, or deleting them. If you have to delete some images that have the same name, I recommend restarting the Mac once they are removed from the Recently Deleted Photos, and/or the trash can. This article will help: Photos for Mac: Delete photos and videos

Since you will be deleting files, you may want to have a back-up prior to starting this: Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac

Thanks and let us know if you need further assistance with this.

hi sr,

thank you.

so, you are saying to check my entire hard drive to see if i have filed with the same name as the files i am trying to transfer over? not just the /folder/ they are going to? i have a 4 TB HD so i can't possibly do this of course.

can't there be some special prefix added to the airdrop / iphone images or some other workaround? it is one thing to rename them but to randomly rename them makes this workflow impractical.

does transferring them over the network acr the same way? i mean, i've never ran into this in other workflows.

also, is it possible le to find out why iOS is making me put in my password every time i get on apple support? it never remembers my password even after checking remember on iOS or afaik on OSX...

THANK YOU
