iCloud says it backed up, but when trying to restore backup not available?

Hi there,

The issue I have seems to be that my iCloud backup won't appear to be available when trying to download it to a third party, despite it showing on iCloud?

The issue in full detail:

I recently moved countries. Right before I moved, an issue happened with my Whatsapp which didn't allow me to open it. So I decided to back up the Whatsapp chat history (I backed up on both iCloud and iTunes) just to be safe and the backup showed up fine on my iCloud account, about 5GB for the backup of the whole phone.

Fast forward a few weeks, I've moved countries, therefore with a different SIM card and number, and I try to restore my iPhone because I want to use Whatsapp with the history from my backup. But, when I delete and reinstall Whatsapp, the backup file isn't available for me to restore.

I'm now really worried with where my Whatsapp chat history would be. It's quite precious to me and I'd love to restore it but Whatsapp shows that it doesn't exist. Would this be because I have a different number now, and I need the same number I backed up with to restore? Or is my data gone forever (which doesn't make sense because it shows on the iCloud)?

I'm sorry for the long post but this is really important to me! I hope you can help.

Thank you!

Hi Gail! Thank you so much for getting back to me.

Unfortunately the issue that happened with Whatsapp meant that I couldn't even open the app - so I couldn't access the Whatsapp settings. But when I entered my iCloud settings on my phone (Settings>iCloud>Storage>Manage Storage>Backups) as you can see below, my Whatsapp is taking up the space (4GB) so one would assume there is some stuff in there.

Now, after I deleted and re-installed Whatsapp after getting my new number, this is what I find in my Whatsapp:

It says I've never backed up but clearly as shown in the first photo there is Whatsapp backup!

Yes, my iCloud Drive is on and I think it was on at the time.

(UPDATE: Tonight I did some snooping around and found a third party app that scans iCloud content for extraction, and tried it on my iCloud backup. It extracted some Whatsapp chats into a strange note with odd characters and old phrases from chats I recognised from my backup! So there is text there from the chat, question is, how do I put it back on my phone)

Thank you, and sorry this is so long again.

Hi Gail. Thanks for your reply, this cleared up a lot of confusion I had.

You're right, it seemed I failed to realise that even though iCloud shows as having Whatsapp stored, the actual app and how successfully (or not) it backed up is responsible.

I had a look at the articles, this is what I found:

Seems like according to what I highlighted above, I need the same SIM card inserted in my phone to be able to restore my chat data on Whatsapp. Because it seems Whatsapp works with, each number has an account, not each phone. Seeing as I have a new number, this would explain the backup not showing up? What do you think?

Number 1 above pretty much confirms that point.

So, so far I've gathered I probably need the same number in order to restore Whatsapp successfully. My old SIM is in the country I was in, so when I get back I'll insert it and try restoring again.

Although - what about in the meantime? I am using Whatsapp right now so does that mean all this new data will be added onto the chat history already present - or will this new chat have to go as soon as I change numbers as well?

Hi Gail,

That's correct, I back up manually. Of course now I regret it considering what happened, I should have backed up way before any of this.

I definitely have enough iCloud storage: I bought the 50GB package, I didn't wanna risk losing that precious history over not having enough space. So my phone's taking up about 6GB (including the 5GB Whatsapp data) of that.

I looked on iCloud Drive, nothing:

Despite there being CLEARLY a lot of space taken up from backed up data on my storage stats in my iCloud settings:

And when I open my Whatsapp files, there are old chats encrypted in a mixture of letters and numbers.

I'm so tired of this. Hopefully my history data is safe, I would be heartbroken if it's gone, but all I can do now is wait to install my old SIM and see if it works out.

Hi Sabby,

So, you indicate above that you backed up on both iCloud and iTunes. When you say you did an iCloud backup and that you could see it, do you mean you did that iCloud backup and then checked to see if your Chats had been backed up to Whatsapp by going to Whatsapp Settings>Chats>Chat Backup?

Did you also have iCloud Drive turned on in iCloud?

According to Whatsapp's documentation for how to back up your Whatsapp chats, it is a different process entirely than an iPhone iCloud Backup.

In your first screenshot, you have your iCloud backup parameters, with Whatsapp set. This will keep all data for Whatsapp with the exception of Chat History.

You must have iCloud Drive turned on in order for you to perfom a backup of your chats. The two articles below provide an overview of doing Whatsapp Chat backup, as well as a specific Whatsapp Chat backup to iCloud.

Be aware, that the confusion seems to be stemming from the fact that Whatsapp uses iCoud technology to store your data. iCloud has no involvement in this. iCloud and iCloud Drive provide the architecture, and Whatsapp provides the programs to back up their own chats. The two help articles from Whatsapp should be helpful:

WhatsApp FAQ - Restoring your chat history - Overview

WhatsApp FAQ - Restoring your chat history - iCloud Backups

Hi Sabby,

Thanks for getting back. That is really unfortunate about the phone number if that is how Whatsapp identifies your account. Since you are using the same iCloud account, I'm just not sure why the phone number should matter, but I don't know how Whatsapp's system works.

I would suggest that you contact the Whatsapp support people to see if they can clarify that point and provide any way for you to get those chats: Contact WhatsApp

They probably are familiar with this situation and may have a workaround for you.

If you are so inclined, please post back with what you ultimately find out. (I'm curious like that cat you see in my avatar 😁).

Cheers,

Hi Gail,

I agree it is quite weird they link it to the number. Especially considering lots of people change their numbers on a regular basis and this should be taken into account.

No way am I contacting Whatsapp again, their customer service - unlike Apple's which is actually quite decent - is terrible and the best they can do is send a copy and pasted response to every other email they may reply to. No consideration towards any unique cases, they just send you the same programmed article, there isn't even a hotline.

The only hope I'm holding onto right now is I'm sure I did see some lines from an old chat in those encrypted files I extracted from a third party program on my computer, so as long as I can somehow recover those I'm good. I'll just wait till I get back to the country where my SIM is which will be in a month anyway and try recovering.

Question - when iCloud automatically backs up something from your phone since say, yesterday does this override/erase any old iCloud data from an backup there may have been? So say, if iCloud is backing up my current chat history on Drive will it erase the previous data from this old backup I can't restore?

Thank you so much for your attention, sorry if this is dragging too long. I very much have an idea of how curious cats are - I have some of my own! 🙂

Have a good evening.

Well, from what it sounds like, you control how often Whatsapp backs up. It looks like your screenprint is showing that you neve auto-backup, but do so manually, is that correct?

With "regular" iCloud backup of your device, you also have the option of Auto or Manual. Auto backup will occur any time your iOS device is plugged into a power source, is on the Lock screen, and is connected to Wifi. It creates an updated backup. However, iCloud can have several backups saved. I have had times when restoring my device from a backup, that I had an option to list (and choose from) older backups. I don't think this is always true - probably depends on how much iCloud space you have.

Anyway, they each have their own control, but any new backup for your Whatsapp chat data is likely to replace the one that is out there now. If it is on iCloud Drive, you could look at your iCloud Drive contents to see if you see any sort of Archive.

Best of luck with the SIM! Fingers crossed 🙂

Just one clarification about the Backup space you are seeing in your iCloud Storage, and iCloud Drive. They are not the same thing.

iCloud Drive is a service offered by Apple along with several other iCloud services.

You purchase storage for your iCloud account in order to have enough room to store the output of those services:

iCloud Photo Library

iCloud Drive Contents

Mail

iOS Device Backups

When you do a backup of your iOS device (either by setting it up to happen automatically or by doing it manually), it gets stored in your iCloud account.

The iOS backup is not the same as the Whatsapp backup that is backed up on iCloud Drive. Whatsapp apparently puts a file out on iCloud Drive when you manually create a backup.

When you do an iOS backup, it is put directly on iCloud, and it is a picture of how your device looked at the moment you made the backup. Although most app data is contained in the regular iOS backup itself, it appears that the Whatsapp Chat backup is kept separate from the iOS one.

So, what you are seeing is that there is currently nothing stored on your iCloud Drive (i.e., Whatsapp Chats), but that you do have iOS backups of your device on iCloud. If you were ever to need to restore your existing device or set up a new one, you would have a backup (or possibly several to choose from) to use to do that restore or set up.

Hi Gail,

Thanks so much for that explanation, it cleared up a lot. I still don't believe my chat history is entirely gone, because of the parts of it that I found encrypted in those weird files I extracted from my iOS backup. So I'm holding onto that hope until I try restoring from my old SIM.

Thanks for answering all my queries! You've been really helpful.

I'll come back in a month's time and let you know how things worked out.

iCloud says it backed up, but when trying to restore backup not available?
