Why was I charged for one song when I have apple music?

I am bleeding out money every month for Apple Music. Now I may ask a stupid question here, but I thought that would entitle me to get to download music without paying for each song?

If not, I am cancelling my Apple Music subscription NOW.

Because Apple Music and the iTunes Store are 2 different things. Because having Apple Music should not preclude you from being able to outright buy a song or album.

If you don't want to be charged, stick to the Apple Music sections. Note that if you ever cancel Apple Music all downloaded songs will stop playing as they require an active subscription to play.

Purchased songs from the iTunes Store will continue to play regardless of the subscription status.

It makes sense in the same way as having an Amazon Prime subscription lets you watch all of the Amazon Prime videos you want, it doesn't let you download the ones that aren't Amazon prime for free. Or having a library card lets you take out all the books you want from the library but doesn't let you walk into a bookstore and take what you want for free.

You're paying Apple a monthly fee to listen to music for as long as you keep paying that fee. Once you stop paying, you lose access to that music. Music you buy from the iTunes Store is yours to keep. That's part of the reason they're two separate apps.

Not all artists permit their music to be streamed.
