iPhone X Ring Volume Low

Why does the ringer volume not increase when I attempt to use Ringer Up volume button or in the Settings?

Also, why does the ringer volume go very low after the first ring and we are not able to increase the volume so it stays louder?

1) When attempting to use the volume up button to increase the Ringer volume it increases the Volume for the sound but NOT the Ringer.

2) When I receive a call the volume is low and goes even lower on subsequent rings.

TROUBLESHOOTING:

I would change the ringer to/from silent then press the up button in an attempt to increase the ringer volume but it only increases the Volume for the sound (ie; music) but NOT the Ringer. The Ringer screen would pop up but it's immediately replaced with the Volume screen.

I went to Settings>Sounds & Haptics>Ringer and Alerts and increased the slider button to max (the sound would ring very loud). I also turned ON Change with Buttons (*the volume of the ringer and alerts can be adjusted using the volume buttons) but the Ringer volume would still be low when I would make a test call.

I spoke with 3 other iPhone X owners and when we performed a test call they, too, had the same issue.

UPDATE: After adjusting and readjusting the volume in the Settings for the ringer and turning the ringer ON/OFF on my iPhone X it suddenly began to ring normally with an incoming call. HOWEVER, the other 3 iPhone X's still have the very low ringing issue when a call comes in despite trying to fiddle with the settings as I did.

Nope, wasn’t looking at phone. As I said in my previous post, it was on the end table. I was out of the room and there were people within 10 feet of the phone. Ring was inaudible although volume was on high and side switch wasn’t on silent. After making the adjustment another forum person suggested it worked.

Thank you! There were 2 buttons on Accessibility with regards to "Attention" - I kept the Face ID one on and turned to other off. Seems to work.

...also seems Apple could do a MUCH better job - maybe with SIRI -- telling me of the things that changed and what the result was... I missed sooooo many calls due to this...

PLEASE Apple do a better job communicating the simple things - after all this is an iPHONE! and talking to people matters ;-)

Next up, finding out controls for AirPods when playing music... touching them matters, like music stopping. How does that work? Wondering if these easily slip out of others' ears... especially when working out... touch them to keep them in... turns off the music!

You are looking at the phone when it rings. Do not do that. When you look at the phone, the Face ID recognizes that you are looking at your phone during an incoming call and therefore you are aware that there is a a call coming in so the ring volume is lowered automatically. If your phone is sitting on the table and you are not looking at it? The volume will be loud and stay loud for as long as you do not pick it up. As soon as you pick up the phone and look at it, the volume lowers. Smart phone.

Weird.....Well now I'm confused because I just got mine two days ago and it was doing the very same thing that you mention, BUT...after reading what you wrote, I did the same thing as you did and now it works just fine but at the same time, my wife was reading from Apple instructions on the Iphone X and it clearly stated that business about if you look into the phone, the volume will lower, which it does, so then, it must be some kind of glitch in all of them to be doing this. I'd be interested in finding out what other experiences are out there with this. Now I must investigate.

Question; Have you tried looking at your phone when a call comes in to see what happens then? If not, try it. Have someone call you while you are looking at your phone. I'd be interested to know what happens. Then lay your phone on the table, don't look at it and have them call it again and see what happens. I would like to know if yours is responding the same as mine.

Yes, patrickduffyleg : this is a feature, but this feature bugs.

Somewhat the iphone keeps thinking there is eyesight when it is no more.

Result : the phone rings LOW for imessages, SMS, phone.

In my case, turning off "Attention Awareness" in Settings was not enough, I had to make a complete reboot.

Anyway, this is a solution to the low ringing volume problem on iPhoneX.

The above DOES NOT WORK. Disabling Attention Awareness is the first thing I tried, and in the begining I thought it worked. But NO go.

Here is now : I have no ringing (not low, but NONE) either for calls, or imessages and sms.

(facebook messenger works, email sounds work, etc. this is only the phone app and the message app that are broken)

The only workaround I found was to go into contacts and enabling EMERGENCY BYPASS feature to text tone and ringtone for that contact to have sound no matter what.

But of course I loose the ability to go silent.

If I do not activate EMERGENCY BYPASS into a contact, if someone text me I have no sound, no vibration, no notification.

This evening I will try and reset re-install ios completely, I am out of options.

I was due to get a new phone and was going to stay with Samsung, but then I bought a new car which only has Apple Car Play. So... The iPhone X is my first iPhone...but I HAVE had an iPad Air since it came out, so I haven't been totally living in the dark ages. Guess the good thing about that is I didn't need to unlearn a lot of stuff from previous iPhones. Since getting the volume issue straightened out, I don't have any complaints. I'm so glad that I bought a case and film shield as I've dropped it a few times (waist level 😮) without having any adverse effects. 😀 Sorry to hear you're unhappy with your X. If you're near an Apple store, I've found them to be VERY helpful here in the Los Angeles area--no question is a dumb question...and coming from a newby user, there have been some...In fact, I can't think of any company, for any product, that has such great customer support as Apple. I should have come over a long time ago...

I need to attend more classes at the Apple Store as I know I'm not using it to its full potential. I haven't tried the AirPods as I unfortunately wear hearing aids. A bluetooth device came with them for the TV which REALLY helps when it comes to hearing dialogue directly in my ear, but to transmit from any other type of device (like a cell phone or car infotainment), I would need to buy another bluetooth that's btwn $400 and $500. Maybe I should start a new thread to find out if anyone has found a less expensive alternative??!

Hopefully i have no iPhoneX, I have a 7+, works ok. My Wife's iPhone X is the worst I've seen since the first gen. (I had them all). She has neither ring nor vibrate nor notification for calls and imessages or sms texts. (EXCEPT if she uses for one contact the emergency bypass feature). Switching attention awareness in the settings does not change the problem. Battery performance is short, device thickness is high. The only benefit I see from iphone X is that when in low power mode (aka all the time) the screen does not shut down on the user reading something.

The users of those devices are considered like a basic monkeys. It would be better to have access to settings like screen dimming time, cpu performance, like on a mac. Not requiring the face thing nor the ridiculous price point.

Keyboard was much faster and better with less errors with iPhone 3G and 4 iOSes. Test selecting cut/paste was also stellar in past versions. Screens are not that bright in sunlight. This high ppi for screens is 100% useless. (do better AA instead) This cpu/gpu performance is useless 99% of the use time (except for gaming time) heat dissipation is not enough for that computing power. Battery chemistry is degrading at body temperature... Well start real work people ! Do something different !! That is what must be done when stopped at a wall. We are in 2018 and still using devices very similar to 2008. This is as ridiculous as the space programmes. Shame on us, buyers, contributing to this.

My iPhone X ringing volume is really low but it’s turned up full can u help please

Did you read this thread? iPhone X ringer will be very low IF you are looking at your phone when it's ringing because of a feature called Attention Aware. This is normal behavior, but can be turned off if you don't want to use Attention Aware.

This support article explains Attention Aware features on your phone.
