Macbbok air not enough space for sierra update?

I received a pop up after downloading Sierra saying that I did not have much disk space left. I own a 2015 Macbook Air and mainly use it for browsing the Internet and keeping documents. Storage specs say that apps and system took up the most storage space. Any recommendations on what I should delete from the computer to create more space or advice?

Photos should have its own designation in the Storage tab. However, the Storage tab does not always report correctly. Also check by choosing your Mac HD and "Get Info" (command-i). It may be different. Try rebuilding Spotlight index.

Some of the space may also be from Time Machine Snapshots if you are using a laptop.

After you've freed up some space download Omni DiskSweeper. It can give you a more accurate read of disk space than Finder or Storage Tab of About this Mac. Also, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:

Thanks for the input! It's strange because when I pull up the storage info it does not indicate that my documents (guessing photos would be under docs) is using a lot of storage. I deleted some apps like garage band and emptied the recycling bin and that seemed to help...but still looks like system & apps show the most GB usage.
