ipad keyboard

Does the keyboard for the ipad work the same way as the keyboard on a macbook? My family types in french at times and on the mac keyboard it's as simple as holding down the keys to access all accents. Those the keyboard for the ipad do the same?

If you tap and hold down on one of the vowels that should be accented, you get this. This is using a U.S. English keyboard

There are four French keyboards in the settings that you can add as well.
