Thanks but I have numerous people who could call me during the night with an emergency. Parents, kids, spouse etc. would I have to make them all emergency contacts? Seams like there would be an easier way to adjust the volume for calls and texts separately.

Settings>Notifications>Messages (or whatever app)... then disable sounds for each app.
But you have to re-enable them every morning.
In my opinion, programming DND... it's more comfortable.
But it's only my opinion.

Go to Contacts. Open one you want to set up as emergency, tap on Edit edit,
then scroll down to Ringer, tap on it and enable 1st option.
Then enable Do Not Disturb.

Under the DND settings, there's an "Allow calls from" setting. Try setting this to "Everyone". This should allow all phone calls to come in, but will silence all other notifications.
You can set it to "Favorites" or "Contacts" as well.
