Inaccurate distance in Activity app

I’ve just got a series 3 watch. Today I went for two walks, the first was 3.92km the second was 2.34km. The activity app thinks I have covered 13.21km, apart from the walks, the rest of the day I was working at my computer and pottering about the house (I work from home).

I’m right handed and have the watch on my right wrist, is this causing issues? I just can’t see how I have covered 7km in the house.

I did have my phone in my pocket while I was walking, is it double counting?

Hi

Double counting

Distance is not being double counted.

The Heath app on your iPhone combines health and fitness data - including steps - from Apple Watch, iPhone and any other sources that share data to the app. When doing so, it automatically adjusts the reported results to avoid any double-counting of the same type of data for the same period from different sources:

Once it has been set up, the Activity app on Apple Watch tracks distance automatically in the background, both during general daily wear and during any workouts that you may record:

Use the Activity app on your Apple Watch - Apple Support

How you wear your Apple Watch

Apple Watch can be worn on either wrist and with the buttons on either side.

As you are right handed and you are wearing your Apple Watch on that wrist, it may help to switch your Apple Watch over to your other wrist. To change your settings, so that your Apple Watch knows which way up and which way around you are wearing it:

On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch (tab) > General > Watch Orientation > choose the preferred wrist and side for the buttons.

If you wish to also change the band components around:

Accuracy of distance estimations

The following steps may also help to improve the accuracy of distance and other Activity-related estimations:

Check your personal information:

  • Estimations depend, in part, on your personal information.
  • To check that this is accurate - and to update it over time:
    • On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch (tab) > Health > Edit - tap and adjust items, then tap on Done.

Check your Location Services settings:

  • On your iPhone, go to: Settings > Privacy > Location Services:
    • Check that Location Services (the main setting at the top) is turned on.
    • In the list of apps beneath, check that Apple Watch Workout is set to While Using.
    • Also enable options under System Services including Motion Calibration & Distance, Wi-Fi Networking and Mobile Network Search.

When recording specific fitness activities, be sure to use the Workout app and to choose the activity type that most closely matches your workout:

  • This includes choosing Other for any workouts that are neither included within nor sufficiently similar to those in the main list.
  • This enables your watch to use the most appropriate sensors and data sources when tracking results.
  • Work out with your Apple Watch - Apple Support

Allow the arm on which you are wearing your Apple Watch to swing naturally as you move around during daily wear and to move as expected during workouts:

  • During general daily wear and when using the Workout app to record workouts when GPS data is either not relevant or not available, the Activity app and Workout app track your arm motion (measured by the accelerometer) when estimating results including steps.

Calibrate your Apple Watch, including resetting any existing calibration data:

  • Calibration teaches your Apple Watch how your arm movements relate to your stride lengths at different speeds when you are walking and/or running. It does this, during outdoor walk and/or outdoor run workouts that are recorded via the Workout app, by comparing data from the accelerometer with GPS (Location Services) data.
  • To calibrate your Apple Watch - and to reset existing calibration data - follow the instructions here:
  • Resetting your calibration data can be equally as helpful for Series 3 models and will not erase your Activity history.

So having it on my dominant hand doesn’t matter?

I understand and I can wear it on either, but as I use my right hand the most, there will be more

movement. For example, I have been sat down for the last hour, but my watch believes I have walked around 50m. So far this morning it thinks I have covered 1.6km. I would be surprised if I had done .4km so far.

i hate wearing watches on my left wrist but I just can’t see how the watch is accurately recording information without me doing so, or specifying that it is being worn on my dominating hand so the tracking can compensate.
