reading audiobook with iPod nano 7th generation

I have an iPod nano 7th generation running s/w 1.1.2. I use it only for reading audiobooks (many hours daily). The side controls for volume up/down and play/pause occasionally have other actions. Play/pause sometimes announces the name of the current book (over the ongoing reading of the book). It, or perhaps volume up, also sometimes skips to the next chapter of the book. (Double-clicking of play/pause is supposed to do this skip, but single-clicking sometimes does.) Is there any way to turn off these behaviors?
