Spotlight won't reindex

I would like Spotlight to reindex my SSD, but it declines. I have tried both dragging and removing the SSD's icon onto the System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy tab, and issuing a sudo mdutil -E / command in Terminal. In both cases, no reindexing occurs: I don't see the dot in the middle of the Menu Bar Spotlight icon, and clicking on the icon brings up the Spotlight search field, not the "Spotlight is reindexing" message.

What else might I try?
