high sierra issues with install

Hello, I have tried everything I know to upgrade to High Sierra. I keep getting an error that says: The file couldn't be opened because it isn't in the correct format. Then it says: The file might be corrupted, truncated, or in an unexpected format.

I've tried starting from fresh with a completely erased drive with zeros written across it and I still get the same error. I have an older 2012 macbook pro that during the initial software recovery I start out on Lion. At the genius bar I was told the update is suppose to work with Lion and on. Anyone know what could be the problem? I was at the apple store 3 times today and they couldn't help either.
