Question: How do I unmount the container disk APFS when disk utility does not work?

I have booted from a flash drive. I have a clean hard drive but disk container 1 with APFS partition will not unmount

so that I can run a repair on it. Please advise......

I suggest you restart in Safe Mode, (hold Shift At Startup) which repairs the Boot Volume as it starts up. Safe Mode also honors the setting of TRIMforce, so it acts to eliminate deleted data blocks on your SSD (if any have accumulated).
