iPad Pro Magic Keyboard unresponsive

while in an email, tap reply, tap where to type and the onscreen keyboard comes up.

while on a web page, tap the address field, and the onscreen keyboard comes up.

In both cases tapping the keyboard icon in the lower left turns the onscreen keyboard off but also deletes the cursor.

tapping where to type again brings up the onscreen keyboard.

this happens with the newer of two Magic Keyboards on two different iPad Pro 12.9’s.

the older Magic Keyboard is fine on both of the iPad Pros.

Tried removing the keyboard and replacing it.

Tried restarting the iPads.

Running the latest OS.

Annoying to say the least ... any ideas ?
