Install High Sierra fails with message "hardware problem, run diagnostics". Diagnostics does not find any problems!
2013 iMac 21" std 1TB spinning rust, 8GB, video card plus Intel video - never been opened, no external h/ware.

Yeah disk utility does not check for hardware errors, it checks for system file integrity.
You would need to run this, How to use Apple Hardware Test on your Mac - Apple Support
or if your mac is older and it came with install disks, usually two grey ones, the second normally has the hardware test on it.
Ok download and then install this, http://etrecheck.com/ run it and then paste the report back here.
No personal info is in the report.
Thanks, but I've decided to stay with Sierra until the next release of High Sierra. ;-)
so do you have a hardware error or not, if you do it won't be resolved by a software upgrade.
Disk Utility doesn't find any problems - I'll just keep doing regular Time Machine backups and replace the disk if there are any more issues. Thanks anyway, guys.
