Canon ip3500 printer does not work

After upgrading to High Sierra the Canon ip3500 printer no longer works. There does not seem to be a driver available. I get a message to go to the App Store but nothing is there, nor on the Canon site. Is there a workaround? It seems incredible that a relatively recent and expensive printer is suddenly obsolete.

According to Canon website the last drivers for your Pixma were for Mac OS X Mountain Lion which was 5 years ago.

you may be able to get it to work with Vuescan, VueScan Scanner Software for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux

unfortunately you need to pay for this.
