Let's start by making sure that you really do have a 1st Gen AirPort Express, since there is a good deal of confusion about the different versions of the Express.

Please look on the side of the AirPort Express for the model number. It is hard to see with gray lettering on a white background, so you may need good lighting and reading glasses. The model number starts with an "A" followed by four numbers.

A 1st Gen AirPort Express is model number A1264. If you see A1084 or A1088, these are much older versions of the Express that were used before Apple began to use the Generation naming for AirPorts in 2008.

Please post back to clarify which model of the Express that you have.

Next item......when you say that the Express does not work with Sierra, we are not sure what you mean by "can't get it to work". Does this mean that the Express will not power up at all? Or, something else? Please provide more details to clarify on what it is that does not work.

Thanks for the info. You do indeed have a 1st Gen AirPort Express.

If you are saying that the AirPort Express powers up with a solid amber light, which remains solid and does not change to slow, blinking amber........this is an indication of a power supply failure on the AirPort Express and the device will almost certainly need to be replaced.

A 1st Gen AirPort Express is at least 5+ years old at this time, and it might be as much as 9+, depending on when the device was placed into service. The average useful life of the Express is about 3-4 years, so that might explain the difficulty that you are having.

As a last resort, power up the Express for a few minutes, then hold in the reset button for 7-8 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the AirPort Express to restart. If the Express displays a solid amber light at this time, it has failed.

If the Express displays a slow blinking amber light, you might be able to reconfigure the Express again to work on your network. However, even if you can get the Express going again, it is not going to go much longer, so you might want to plan accordingly.
