I find myself with a newly initialized Hard Disk in my iMac (I won't bore you with the details of how that came to be) and I have misplaced my original DVD. I have a Drive Genius Boot Disk, but it doesn't include an App for the AppStore - is there any way for me to download Mac OS, or am I going to have to go to Apple and request a new DVD?

If you have access to another Mac, sign into the App Store using your Apple ID, and download the desired OS version. When the installer opens, quit it. You can make a bootable USB stick to install using this free program which will do all the work for you. Boot your computer off the USB stick and reinstall the OS.

You don't mention what version of macOS you're trying to install and also what exact model of iMac it is (look at the "Model Identifier" in the Hardware section of "System Information.app" which you get to by clicking on the "About this Mac" then "System Information" or you can get there directly by holding down the Option key when you click on "About this Mac" and then select the "System Information" item.) It sounds like you might be looking for Snow Leopard version but just wanted to be sure.

My friend has an iMac as well - so this might be an option - he is trying to find his own Snow leopard DVD - that would be the easiest option.

My machine came with Snow Leopard, but i was running Sierra - so I don't really mind - if I can get Snow Leopard I can quickly update.
