MacPro Early 2008 - Black Screen problems

( This supposedly was moved to the MacBook Pro forum, this is a MAC PRO problem not an MBP

I started to notice that when I boot up , after the apple screen sometimes my screen goes black and the fan runs at high speed. I have to do a hard shutdown and when I reboot it usually boots right up. But now I notice I can have the machine running for a few hours and all of a sudden the screen goes black and I have to shutdown and reboot cold.

I went ahead and ran Etrecheck and nothing hardware related comes up that would cause this

I'm running 10.11.6 in this early MPro 2008

16mb memory

I use this machine for work and cannot have this happen and lose unsaved files.

Anyone?

Along with kaz-k do an SMC. Also as for data concerns make sure you have external hard drives that obtain a copy of information. Myself I have two one is time machine and the other I manually add information too. See How to use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support.

The system is obsolete too Apple at this point. See Vintage and obsolete products - Apple Support. So getting it service would be expensive as parts would be used and rare.

You can try reseeding the ram or doing a reinstall without erasing. See How to reinstall macOS - Apple Support for more information.

Also macOS 10.11.6 is the highest supported on the Mac Pro (Early 2008).

Leaving the door open is not the best plan, becasue it is easier for malware to sneak in that way. There are TWO different ways to allow opening of "from Anywhere" Applications, described in this terse (possibly deliberately terse) article linked below. My preference, (because I can remember it) is to open:

system preferences > security > general ...

...and leave it open while attempting to open a "from anywhere" item. The panel then grows a button that says (Open Anyway) and you can proceed.

macOS Sierra: Open an app from an unidentified developer

Ok I replaced the video card did an SMC reset and still the machine boots up all the way past the grey, then apple and main background pic then black screen. Again have to hold the power button to do a hard restart and then it boots fine and runs fine.

I was reading somewhere about the memory being seated incorrectly but if this was the case why would the machine boot fine the second time?

I can only run up to 10.11 on this machine as it is a work horse so bringing it in for service is not the answer for me as I do not have a back up machine. If there is nothing else I can do then I think it's time for a newer Mac Pro maybe a 2012.

Maybe rebuilding the directory on my main drive? Is it worth a shot?

Anyone?

Hmm, really think I should try to re install?

I have a back up so its no problem for me, I did try to re seat the memory a while ago as my Mac Pro has the memory cards on a separate board so to remove, blow out the slots with some compressed air can't hurt.

This Mac pro has been a beast, so reseating the ram and re installing the OS will be the last attempt to correct this problem, if it does not work, time for a new machine.

Google Chrome has a reputation as a memory leaker and a resource hog. with the very recent release of Firefox 57, there may be better choices for browsers available.

CleanMy Mac is not something ANY Mac user should be using -- your Mac does not need to be cleaned, and in 10.9 and later, will run slower if you clean system caches. There are reports of this utility discarding system files needed for proper operation.

Despite having lots of RAM, your report (which typically finishes in three minutes or less) took nearly ten. This can be an indication that your boot Drive is experiencing re-trys, and may be near death.

What the report does NOT show is graphics card hangs or kernel panics, and you posted an explanation of the power-off that was listed.

Nov 24, 2017 7:17 AM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

Thanks for this, I removed the malware, the gatekeeper was on cause I always had to go to open it when I downloaded san app I have it open because I do not download just anything from anywhere. The start up items listed in red no longer work with 10.11 should i leave them or remove?

I also notice that Google Chrome has this Ripple Emulator that takes some time and I do have the new FF browser but will leave GC for now.

Only thing I can do is rebuild my main drive directory and after that let me see if I still have these issues, if so.

Time for a new one. Thanks so much RD

Hi,

I was having the same problem with my MacPro. I tried blowing the dust off the Ram heat sinks, that didn't work. Then I tried pulling the power cord from the back of the computer then holding the power on button for about 45 seconds and while still holding the power button put the power cord back into the computer. My MacPro is working fine now. Hope this helps.
