How to get sound for notifications?

Hi

I'm not getting sounds for notificationson my nwe iPhone X, ios 11.1.

An example, Messenger. I've looked in Notifications, sound is on, and I've looked at the App itself in the Settings list, but I get no sound to alert me.

What am I doing wrong?
