Would somebody tell how to delete old files created by time machine in a HD?

In my Mac mini i use a mackintosh external HD where I put my time mechine backups. Now I want

to delete a lot of old backup files but only put in the Trash bin BUT doesn't delete them saying they are

being used (?). Does somebody what should I do?

You should never try deleting old TM backups via Finder, they will stay in your Trash. TM should delete old backups automatically when your drive gets too full. If you eject your TM drive the files will disappear from your Trash but when you reconnect it they will be there again. The easiest way to deal with this is to erase your TM drive and start over.
