If you DO have a Trusted Backup, you can risk doing a re-install-in-place. By design, it is not intended to delete any of your stuff . But if your drive is failing, it could wipe out the entire contents of the drive, including ALL your files.

If you do NOT have a Trusted backup, obtain two External drives:

• One to hold a new Install of macOS -- the same version you are running now. If you can get one that is a candidate for replacing your Internal drive, that may be very helpful in the near future.

• One for the Trusted Backup, large (2x to 3x or more than the stuff that needs to be backed up), but do not pay extra for FAST.
