Question: Drag a file to the desktop... it takes several moments to appear?

Hi, I have a late 2015 5K 27" iMac... 3.2 GHz Intel Core i5, 24 GB RAM....

I'm running High Sierra.

I've noticed lately that if I save a file on the desktop, it takes several moments before the file will even appear on the desktop. Occasionally, there will be a temporary file of some sort that appears, with its own icon, on the desktop. Moments later, the actual file will appear.

Does this indicate something about the "writing speed" of the hard drive at the moment?
