Software update gets you an update to your current system - you are already on the highest version of Snow Leopard so there are no updates. Upgrades are available in the Mac App Store in Applications (labelled simply 'App Store').

OSX 10.9, Mavericks, is no longer available but you should be able to upgrade to the current system, High Sierra, from the App Store. However you will first need to upgrade to El Capitan using this special link: Connecting to the Mac App Store - you can't go directly.

Be aware that PPC programs, such as Appleworks, will not run on any system higher than Snow Leopard.
