Choose a group from contacts to send a group message rather than typing one name at a time

In Settings/Messages, I have iMessage turn on, Send as SMS turned on, MMS Messaging turned on, and Group Messaging turned on.

So how do I send a text message to a group that has already been created in Contacts. I can open up a new message, tap the +

1) then choose groups from the upper left (circled in red)

2) and then even find my already created group in Contacts. Clicking on it gives it a promising little checkmark.

I click Done in the upper right confident that this will add it to the To Field back in Messages. Nope. It returns me to this screen:

Clicking on Groups takes me back to the Contacts Page, clicking on cancel returns me to the message with a blank To Field. Clicking on any of the names opens the contact. No way to add the group in one shot. Surely Apple doesn't want us to type in every individual name in the To Field. That would be absurd.
