Check the "Recently Deleted" album in the Photos app. The deleted photos might still be there pending a 30 day 'hard' deletion. You can hard-delete 'Recently Deleted' photos immediately by going to that folder, pressing 'Select' (top right), then click "Delete All" (bottom left).
