I don't know how to determine if the app is free or not.

See Download apps and games using the App Store - Apple Support which goes over some of the basic, but essentially free apps well say GET or FREE. What you need to look out for is the specific information to see if In-App Purchases is listed. If an app has In-App Purchases it may still do what you need it for, but may ask to upgrade/buy certain features (so it may have limits (kinda like a trail without an expiration)).
