What happen to the old ios system files after updated to the new one

i'm kinda wondering about the process of updating to new ios on an iphone...

after i updated my iphone to the new ios, then what happen to the old ios system files ?

does it become residue that consume some portions of my iphone storage ? or it is just simply wiped out from the iphone ?
