Question:

Question: iMac 2011 very slow. many lollipop/snowball/wheels of death! etrecheck report. how to fix

Hi community. My iMac seems to be on a slow descent into slower and slower operation. My etrecheck report is copied below. Any easy fixes? I'm semi-tech savvy, but not comfortable with writing command codes and the like. My iMac has 2T storage with 1T available. And 10gigs of ram. Running OS Sierra 10.12.6. I mostly use Word and Photoshop. Any help much appreciated. thanks!

Do. Not. Be. Offended.

You have the most seriously junked up Mac I've ever seen. AV software, third party disk utilities, trim enabler (maybe I missed an ssd in there somewhere) junk junk junk.

Your last Time Machine backup was a year and a half ago, and I see you've been using Intego backup? I'd recommend that you make sure you have your files backed up, erase the hard drive, reinstall Mac OS, reinstall the applications you actually use from their original source and then restore your data.

I can also say that I've never seen an iMac with a 2-2-4-2 ram configuration, how did that happen? Although I don't think it's a huge contributor I think the mismatched pair adds to the poor performance.

Make sure you have a working backup before doing anything and that you have the resources necessary to install any software that you use including licenses. Don't jump into anything. Someone here might offer different suggestions that's just what I would do.

Hi Mike.

Ouch. OK. Not offended. Had the RAM installed by an indie tech - guess I was too trusting. Definitely I was not-tech-savvy enough. Sigh. Should I replace one so I have 2-2-4-4?

I will back-up and re-install. I've never done that with time-machine, so I'm trepidatious about licenses. Guess I'll find out. Any process tips appreciated.

Thanks for your help. Wish me luck!

When you erase and reinstall don't put so many items in the User/Login Items section. Only put apps in there that must be launched at boot up. Others you can launch when needed and then close when finished.

Also reboot occasionally to clear out cache and temp files.
