Question: Missing hard drive as option for restore from Time Machine

After a hard restart, my late 2010 MacBook Pro (OS High Sierra) opens in Disk Utilities mode. When I select “Restore from Time Machine”, the option to select the internal hard drive as the place to install the backup from my Seagate external HD never appears. Therefore, I have nowhere to install the backed up data. The HD is missing. I used disk repair and it reports no errors. Has the HD simply died?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.2), 11/2010

Hi,

If you can select the HD in Disk Utility in order to run First Aid, then the HD may be OK. Quit DU and follow the prompts to reinstall the OS, then run Migration Assistant (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204350 ) to restore from your backup.
