High Sierra update frozen will not start up

Just updated my iMac with high Sierra but it froze before the end now it will not start just goEs back to the same page but bar and updating totally stuck. I have USB backup but the iMac will not go into the startup page to choose restore. Tried a combination of keys I have

Ctrl, Fn, the one with the cross symble and Alt on my usb keyboard and iMac old enough to run Sierra so what ever year that was to be honest I am lost without my iMac..

Any advice welcome I can't afford to buy another and my iPad mini was on ever a stand in so links bookmarks all out of date.

pressed a combination and finally got access to my USB drive so hopefully I can restore. As for updating can I ever trust the Apple update system again ?

this as been a nightmare of unplugging and restarting trying all combination I thought it was just command plus r but no that just starting it looking for an Internet solution.

Update at your peril ! But will it go ok the next time ?

I found MACos recovery instructions. To get there, if I remember correctly, shut down, then hold command r while starting up. Tried it a few times and found I had to keep pressing command r to get to the correct screen. Clicked on reinstall os. Hope this helps. Another 30 minutes to finish. Will let you know if it works.

Well after many hours my iMac is back up and running as for the update I am not sure if I will try again I can't lose my main workstation for hours again. Is the update duff I wonder otherwise why would it just freeze before the full install and screw the whole machine up, leaving me without a workstation most of the day

Well call me stupid but I tried the update again overnight. 8 hours later nothing the new freshly download update froze solid. Lucky enough after a few pulling plug and putting back in using fn, Ctrl, cmd and R I have started the restore progress once again.

How Apple as screwed up this update so much I have no idea but I think they should stop others downloading until it works for all. I wonder how many have wasted days on this like me. Hopefully after my restore I can once again get the use of my iMac again.

Update at your own risk !

After some research NOW my iMac is running again it seems the problem I have is being a Beta tester it's all to do with APFS so Beta testers cannot upgrade, Thanks Apple. So if your a tester and running 10.12.6 the upgrade will just freeze to stop this is complicated and as an OAP I am not up to something that sounds complicated

Thank You Once Again Apple, you could have sorted this out before offering the upgrade I am sure
